Equal Access Scholarships - University of York

The University of York offers one Equal Access Scholarship for a taught postgraduate student seeking refuge in the UK. York says the award supports asylum-seeking students to access higher education and is part of its support for sanctuary-seeking students and applicants.

The scholarship is open to international non-EU students already living in the UK who hold a conditional or unconditional offer for a one-year postgraduate course at the University of York. It applies to eligible postgraduate taught study at York and is not available for some courses, including Hull York Medical School courses, the two-year LLB (Hons) Law (Senior Status), and the two-year MSc Nursing routes listed on the page.

Selection is competitive. A University panel reviews eligibility, the application to York including any personal statements or references, and answers to three supporting questions. Applicants may also be invited to an informal interview after applications close.

The award covers one year of postgraduate taught masters study. York says that if a recipient later becomes eligible for UK government student finance, the living allowance will stop, while the fee waiver may continue for that year subject to University finances. If a student is told by the Home Office that they should not be studying at university, the award ends and the student must leave their studies immediately.

• You must have a conditional or unconditional offer from the University of York for a one-year postgraduate course.
• You must have applied for asylum before applying for a place at university.
• You must not have access to mainstream funding, such as student finance or a local authority grant.
• Your immigration status must be one of the following: Discretionary/Limited Leave to Remain (DLR/LLR), Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), Humanitarian Protection (HP), awaiting a decision on an application for refugee status, leave as an Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Child (UASC leave), Refused Asylum Seeker, or a dependent or partner of one of these status groups.
• Applicants who have already been granted Refugee Status or Humanitarian Protection Status may be eligible for financial support from Student Finance England.
• You are not eligible if you are applying to study a course at the Hull York Medical School.
• You are not eligible if you are applying for the two-year LLB (Hons) Law (Senior Status).
• You are not eligible if you are applying for the two-year MSc Nursing (Mental Health) or MSc Nursing (Adult).
• You are not eligible if you are applying for a course that includes work placements and you do not currently have a right to work in the UK.

• A full fee waiver, so you do not need to pay tuition fees.
• A maintenance award of up to £14,880 to help with living costs.

1. Apply to the University of York for an eligible postgraduate taught course.
2. Apply online for the Equal Access Scholarship using the scholarship application form.
3. Provide your York Application ID.
4. Provide evidence of your asylum status, such as a biometric residence permit or a UKVI share code.
5. Answer the three supporting questions in the application form.
6. Wait for a possible informal interview invitation after applications close.
7. If successful, accept your offer at the University of York or make York your firm choice on UCAS, if you applied through UCAS.
