Felix Scholarships for Indian Students at University of Reading

The Felix Scholarship scheme is available to high-achieving students from India and other developing countries pursuing postgraduate studies at the University of Reading. The Felix Scholarships cover tuition fees at the international rate and provide a stipend (maintenance grant) to cover living expenses (around £17,894). The scheme also provides allowances for clothes, books and a return flight home.

For Indian citizens, up to five Felix Scholarships are available to students pursuing either a PhD or a master’s. For students from developing countries, one award is available for study at master’s level only. Felix Trustees have indicated the award is aimed primarily at candidates from Africa and excludes “all Western countries, including most of the European Community, and China/Taiwan”, with additional country eligibility requiring Felix Trustees approval when nominated by the University.

Eligibility requires applying to start a full-time postgraduate degree at the University of Reading, demonstrating academic excellence and financial need, and being expected to return to work in the home country after completing studies. Short listing for consideration involves acceptance for admission, and shortlisted candidates are invited for an interview. Candidates cannot be considered for an award without an interview.

Awards are available (depending on eligibility) for up to three years. The scholarship requires scholars to complete their course of study within the time frame set by the individual universities. The scheme anticipates that scholars can accumulate savings from the maintenance allowances to fund any extension required and to cover expenses for extended fieldwork trips. The scholarship also requires signing a letter of undertaking to return to the country of origin on completion to make a contribution to that country.

• For the scholarship for Indian citizens: applicant must have not previously studied for one year or more outside India (unless the applicant is a Felix Alumnus).
• For the scholarship for Indian citizens: applicant must have at least a first-class bachelor’s degree from an Indian university or comparable institution.
• For the scholarship for Indian citizens: applicant must not hold a degree from a university outside of India.
• For the scholarship for Indian citizens: scholarship is available for students pursuing either a PhD or a master’s.
• For the scholarship for students from developing countries: applicant must have at least a first-class bachelor’s degree from a university or comparable institution, or equivalent.
• For the scholarship for students from developing countries: applicant must not hold a degree from a university outside of their home country.
• For the scholarship for students from developing countries: scholarship is for master’s level only.
• PhD candidates from developing countries are encouraged to consider alternative funding options.
• Spouses’ costs will not be met.
• Applicants must demonstrate financial need.
• Candidates must be accepted for admission to be considered for short listing.

1. Apply online for a master’s or PhD on the University of Reading website.
2. After receiving an offer of admission, complete the scholarship application form available on the me@reading portal.
3. Only candidates who have been accepted for admission will be considered for short listing.
4. Shortlisted candidates are invited for interview in India between April and May (method can be in person or via Skype/Zoom). Candidates cannot be considered for an award without an interview.
5. If interviewed and offered a Felix Scholarship for entry in September/October, the award cannot be deferred.
