Global Fellowship Scheme

The University of St Andrews Global Fellowship Scheme is a programme that funds Global Fellows to engage in original research that extends the frontier of knowledge. Applicants should be recognised as significant scholars in their field or emerging leaders with contributions to original research. Global Fellows are expected to hold an established academic position.

The scheme requires Global Fellows to engage online with students and staff and to participate in one visit of up to four weeks. The University provides the Global Office’s travel and visit support and expects participation in scholarly activities across Academic Schools, Centres and Institutes, both online and in person during the academic year.

Applications are reviewed by the relevant Schools, with final decisions made centrally by a multidisciplinary selection committee made up of senior academic and professional staff at the University of St Andrews. Results are announced by Friday 29 May, and the University states that detailed feedback cannot be provided to unsuccessful applicants.

Support includes tailored travel and visit support, a stipend of £1000 per 28 day visit (or per day sum for shorter visits), self-catered accommodation in a one bedroom apartment or equivalent, return airfare in economy class booked by the University, airport transfers to and from St Andrews, and access to University IT and library facilities. The University cannot provide a buy-out for teaching at the home institution, and candidates are usually on sabbatical or research leave or indicate a time when they are free. Global Fellows also give a research seminar, postgraduate lecture, undergraduate training activity or similar during their visit.

• Must have completed a PhD degree or equivalent before submitting an application.
• Must be based outside the UK.
• Must be employed in a university, research institute or similar.
• Global Fellows are expected to hold an established academic position.

1. Identify shared research interests and ensure alignment with a proposed host School.
2. While not mandatory, strongly recommend contacting an appropriate St Andrews academic to discuss the proposed collaboration and the Global Fellowship application.
3. Send a completed 2026-2027 Global Fellowship application form (Word) and your academic CV to [email protected] by 17:00 (GMT) on 2 March 2026.
4. Await acknowledgment emails, which will typically be sent within three working days.
