NINE Northern Ireland and North East of England DTP Scholarship

The Northern Ireland and North East Doctoral Training Partnership (“NINE DTP”) is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, with support from the Department for the Economy Northern Ireland (DfENI). NINE DTP awards studentships to social scientists to support Doctoral studies and develop core research skills.

NINE DTP states that it awards in excess of 50 studentships across seven partner Universities for Doctoral studies on three year (PhD), three-and-a-half year (PhD with Research Methods), or four year (Masters and PhD) programmes.

NINE DTP funding is supported by ESRC requirements, and applicants must apply directly to the University of their choosing in accordance with that institution’s rules and deadlines. Eligibility for ESRC funding does not guarantee eligibility for a place at the University; applicants must meet the University requirements to take up a position. NINE DTP also requires consent for data processing via a signed form, and an equal opportunities monitoring form submitted separately in advance of the deadline.

1. Apply directly to the University of your choosing, following that institution’s rules and regulations and its deadlines.
2. Before applying, familiarise yourself with institutional practice, guidelines and deadlines to ensure your application is registered in a timely and effective manner.
3. Arrange supervision: identify and make contact with an academic who can supervise the proposed research; prospective supervisors can advise on eligibility, writing the research proposal, and applying for funding.
4. Prepare and submit the NINE ESRC studentship documents listed for NINE DTP funding, as part of your university application process (including consent and equal opportunities monitoring requirements).

• Institutional Postgraduate Application Form (including a research proposal that must not exceed 2,000 words, including footnotes, but excluding bibliographies)
• Current CV (maximum 2 pages)
• Two references (submitted at the time of the application)
• Full transcripts of previous qualifications obtained to date
• Consent form (signed copy; submitted either with your university application, or directly to your supervisor)
• Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form (downloadable via the webpage; submitted separately to the intended department in advance of the deadline for applications)
