Northumbria University UK Postgraduate Sanctuary Scholarship

Northumbria University offers the Sanctuary Scholarship for applicants seeking asylum in the UK. The university states that the scholarship awards three students with a £3,000 contribution towards studies and a full 100% fee waiver for a wide range of eligible Full-Time Masters courses starting in September.

The scholarship is aimed at people currently seeking asylum in the UK, or dependants, spouses, or civil partners of someone currently seeking asylum in the UK. Applicants must have received a conditional or unconditional offer on a Full-Time one-year Masters course at Northumbria University starting in September, and they must meet course conditions including English Language competency requirements.

Northumbria University states there is a competitive selection process. Applicants must apply via an online written application form; a selection panel considers all eligible applications and shortlists for interview. Those shortlisted attend an interview in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and successful applicants are chosen by the interview panel based on the form, relevant documentation, and interview.

Northumbria University states the scholarship is provided for a maximum of one year while the applicant remains eligible and continues to make satisfactory progress. The university adds that selected students will not be eligible for any other Northumbria scholarships during the course of study, and that applicants must promptly inform the university if their immigration status changes. If a place is deferred or the applicant ceases to be a registered student, the scholarship offer is withdrawn, and the university reserves the right to withdraw the scheme.

• Provide evidence of your current immigration status.
• Have received a conditional or unconditional offer on a Full-Time one-year Masters course at Northumbria University starting in September.
• Meet all course conditions, including English Language competency requirements.
• Be living in the North East of England at the time of application (Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland, Cleveland and North Cumbria).
• Be unable to access UK student finance (tuition fee loans and/or maintenance loans) by virtue of immigration status.
• Spouse or civil partner condition: your spouse or civil partner must have been your spouse or civil partner on the date your asylum application was made.
• Dependent children or step-children condition: must have been aged 18 or under on the date your asylum application was made.
• Be unable to access UK student finance (tuition fee loans and/or maintenance loans) because of immigration status.
• Students selected will not be eligible for any other Northumbria scholarships during the course of study.
• Must have applied to study a Full Masters degree (180 credits).
• Must not apply for a PGCE (those who apply for a PGCE will not be eligible).
• Do not apply if living outside the UK, because applications will not be considered.
• Must not defer your place or cease to be a registered student (scholarship offer will be withdrawn).

• A 100% tuition fee waiver on Full-Time one-year eligible courses.
• A cash contribution of £3,000 towards studies.
• The cash award payment schedule: 25% in November, 25% in February, and 50% in May.
• Successful applicants must provide bank details for payment via the BACs system.
• 100% tuition fee discount applies only to eligible Full Masters courses studied at Newcastle City Campus and Coach Lane Campus.
