Stephen Young Global Leaders’ Scholarship Programme

The Stephen Young Global Leaders’ scholarship programme (SYGL) seeks to honour Professor Stephen Young, a former Head of the Department of Marketing and Dr Charles Huang’s supervisor and mentor during his PhD studies. The Charles Huang Foundation donation provides scholarships for scholars of exceptional merit undertaking the Strathclyde MBA or an MSc in Strathclyde Business School on a full-time study basis (one year). The programme aims to develop global leaders in society and business.

The scholarship is aimed at applicants for the Strathclyde MBA or an MSc in Strathclyde Business School, taken as a member of the full-time MBA/MSc cohort. Alongside MBA/MSc studies, each scholar receives additional mentorship support and the opportunity to apply for enhanced leadership development via the Stephen Young Institute of International Business (SYIIB). Scholars become part of the wider SYIIB Community.

Selection is based on an online application form. All applications are reviewed, and some are shortlisted by a Strathclyde Business School panel. A Selection Committee is then appointed to consider shortlisted applications, chaired by the Executive Dean of SBS (or nominee) with senior academic representatives. Decisions are made by simple majority, with the Chair making the final decision if needed. Interview attendance is required for shortlisted candidates and is not a guarantee of a scholarship.

Support lasts for one year on a full-time study basis, and the scholarship includes the full Strathclyde MBA/MSc fees and a stipend to cover living costs for the academic year. Additional mentorship/coaching is provided by at least one business leader. SYGL scholars may apply for conditional enhanced opportunities coordinated by the SYIIB, and participation in these options is described as conditional on meeting programme requirements and availability of places.

• You must meet the admissions criteria for your chosen Strathclyde full-time MBA/MSc programme.
• Applications to the MBA/MSc programme should be made after you have successfully completed the selection process for the SYGL scholarship and hold a scholarship award.
• You must demonstrate exceptional academic merit, for example a first-class undergraduate degree from a UK University, or an equivalent academic qualification from a comparable non-UK institution.
• You must be a self-funded student and not have access to other sources of funding such as corporate sponsorship or alternative scholarship funding.
• If shortlisted, you must attend a formal interview (either in person or virtually); attendance is not a guarantee of a scholarship.
• Subject eligibility: Accounting & finance; Business; Data analytics; Economics; Entrepreneurship; Management; Management science; Marketing.
• Level eligibility: Postgraduate Taught.
• Study modes eligibility: Full Time.
• Fee status: England or N. Ireland or Rep. Ireland or Wales, Home (Scottish), International.
• Student type: Applicant.
• The programme encourages applications from under-represented groups, particularly individuals from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, women, LGBT+, disabled candidates and candidates from lower socio-economic groups.
