UK University of York Undergraduate International Scholarship in History

The University of York Department of History awards the History BA Undergraduate Scholarship, funded through the generosity of its donors. The department describes the scholarship as support for talented students with the academic potential to study History at York and who would benefit from a BA Honours degree in History (or a BA Combined Honours degree including History) to achieve educational and professional ambitions.

The scholarship is open to International (including EU) and UK (home) students and is for students in the Department of History. It applies to students commencing their undergraduate studies in the Department of History, including Combined Honours degrees where History is one of the subjects studied.

Selection is based on how applicants meet the stated eligibility criteria and who “best meets” those criteria. Applicants must submit a written statement of up to 500 words explaining how they have overcome barriers, how they hope to contribute to society after their studies, and why they applied and what difference the scholarship will make to their time at York.

The scholarship provides a total of £3,000, paid in annual instalments of £1,000 for three years. If a student is registered for a four-year degree, the scholarship is not paid in the third year (usually the year abroad/placement component); instead, the third £1,000 instalment is paid in the final year. The department states that eligibility is automatically assessed using Residual Household Income (RHI) information supplied in the application for Student Loans. The scholarship cannot be held with the Mark Stevens Scholarship; it can be held with other wider University awards.

• Family Residual Household Income (RHI) must be £42,875 or less (threshold is subject to change).
• Must be able to provide a written statement of up to 500 words addressing: (a) how you have overcome barriers in your personal, social or domestic life to achieve your educational goals; (b) how you hope to contribute to society in the future following your studies; (c) why you have applied for a History BA Undergraduate Scholarship and what difference it will make to your time at York.
• Must apply for the scholarship for the relevant entry (the page specifies commencing an undergraduate degree in the Department of History in September 2024, including Combined Honours degrees with History as one of the subjects).

• Total value: £3,000.
