Associate Degree Nursing Aas (Summer Start)

The Associate Degree Nursing AAS (Summer Start) prepares students for employment as a registered nurse (RN) and positions them for leadership, management, and/or further nursing degree options. Students study topics including physical assessment, safety and infection control, data analysis, IV management, patient teaching, and team communication. Key classes include ADN-145 Role Transitions, ADN-221 Pharmacology II, ADN-641 Nursing III, ADN-642 Nursing IV, and ADN-311 RN Issues and Trends.

Classes meet in the mornings or afternoons on campuses in West Burlington and Keokuk. The program includes nursing orientation, and students must complete admission-related requirements once admitted. Graduates who successfully earn their nursing license can work in clinics, hospital units, medical offices, emergency, and critical care.

Students in SCC’s nursing programs may be eligible to receive $8,000 from Great River Health while they are in the program, with a commitment to work for Great River Health at its facilities in the region.

• Current Iowa Certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
• Complete and attain minimums in standardized scores within 24 months of review for acceptance into the program (ACT, SAT, or Next-Gen ACCUPLACER/ALEKS options listed below).
• Complete the following classes with a grade of C or better: BIO-168 Human Anatomy and Physiology I; BIO-173 Human Anatomy and Physiology II; BIO-186 Microbiology.
• Required to attend nursing orientation and complete requirements once admitted to the program, including: pass a mandatory background check; submit (at their own expense) a completed physical examination form and immunizations for health care providers; current certification in CPR-Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers; current certification in Mandatory Reporter-Adult & Child Abuse; signed Confidentiality Agreement; current HIPAA Certification; current Blood Borne Pathogen certification.
• All health career programs require students to earn a grade of "C" (2.0) or above in all coursework within the program, and all other eligibility requirements must be met.
