The Building Construction Certificate at Southeastern Community College focuses on basic construction skills for a job site. Students study carpentry fundamentals through CON-147 Carpentry I, and they complete CON-332 Construction Materials and Resources and MAT-702 Introduction to Math Applications. The certificate is awarded after successful completion of first semester courses. Students also receive OSHA training through the course content in CON-147.
Instruction in CON-147 includes lecture and lab components, with topics such as basic safety, hand and power tools, basic rigging, wood building materials, floor and wall systems, site preparation, and concrete handling and forming foundations and flatwork. CON-332 provides an overview of construction materials, including properties, manufacturing, and applications. MAT-702 includes lecture and lab and supports applied mathematics for later study.
This certificate can take you into work as a framer, roofer, or concrete finisher. The program is structured around Fall Semester I course credits that total 12 for the first semester.
