About this program

The Certificate in Languages at St. Mary’s University offers advanced language study beyond the Language requirement in the St. Mary’s Core Curriculum. It is for students who want to continue studying a particular language but do not wish to complete the major or minor program in that language. Concentration options include Portuguese and Spanish.

To earn the certificate, students must take two courses in the 3000, 4000, or 5000 level offered in the Languages Department and taught in the target language. The program includes language study courses and courses where the subject is taught exclusively in the target language. All St. Mary’s students may pursue the certificate, and it can be taken alongside a language minor.

Entry requirements

The certificate requires that students meet a high-grade requirement. The certificate is not a substitute for a minor. Students can pursue a language minor in addition to the certificate, and the certificate is different from a minor because it requires courses in language study or courses taught exclusively in the target language.
