Civil Engr PhD

The University of Idaho offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in civil engineering within the College of Engineering. The program supports advanced research in environmental engineering; geotechnical engineering; structural engineering; transportation and materials engineering; water resources, hydrology and hydraulics; or ecohydraulics. Students work with faculty in a defined specialty area to develop research questions, conduct original investigations, analyze and interpret results, and communicate their work.

The Ph.D. includes rigorous written and/or oral qualifying examinations, followed by written and oral preliminary examinations before independent dissertation research. Students must complete a minimum of 78 semester credits beyond the bachelor’s degree. The program also requires original research and a publicly defended dissertation. Financial support is tied to enrollment, since the department accepts only Ph.D. students it can support through graduate research assistantships.

• The department accepts only Ph.D. students for whom it can provide financial support, with competitive graduate research assistantships available to support doctoral study.
• Hold an undergraduate degree in a STEM-related field and have taken the necessary engineering coursework (see other requirements section above).
• Hold a B.S. and/or M.S. in civil and environmental engineering or closely related field.
