The Community Engagement and Leading School Change Graduate Certificate builds a sociological understanding of race and class dynamics in the communities students serve. It also develops tools for an asset-based understanding of students and families, along with skills to make changes that improve how schools serve and are accountable to students, families, and communities.
Students examine sociological theory, the concept of professional learning communities, and implement action research initiatives. The program uses a four-course sequence to strengthen students’ capacity for community engagement and school change in response to community needs.
The program is designed to help school professionals build change from the bottom up, empowering students, families, and community members to become drivers of positive change.
