Doctorate Applied Theology

The Doctor of Theology in Applied Theology at Saint Leo University is an online Doctor of Theology designed for students engaged in ministry or education within the American Catholic Church and other ecclesial contexts. Students critically engage theological methods, contexts, concepts, and practices. The program focuses on demonstrating knowledge and applying theological knowledge to ministerial, educational, and other professional contexts, including research in applied theology.

The degree requires 60 credit hours, including 42 hours of coursework, comprehensive exams, and a dissertation. It is offered online and includes a four-day residency at Saint Leo’s main campus during July at the end of the first year. The program prepares students to grow careers in ministry, education, publishing, and non-profit sectors.

• A 3.0 or higher GPA in a master of theology program (e.g. MA, MTS, or M.Div.) or related field
• Two letters of recommendation from instructors or professional colleagues
• Current résumé or curriculum vitae
• Statement of professional goals, including specific area of interest
• 10-15 page writing sample
• Official transcripts of undergraduate and graduate degrees
• Four years of documented, related work experience
