The University of Louisiana at Lafayette offers a Ph.D. in earth and energy sciences. The program combines courses in chemistry, physics, environmental science, and geology, with focus on environmentally safe extraction of energy resources. Students study traditional energy sources such as fossil fuels and alternative sources such as biofuels and geothermal, solar, wave, and wind energies.
Students follow a 72-credit hour curriculum. Coursework is taught by faculty in the University’s physics and chemistry departments and in the School of Geosciences. Degree candidates write dissertations under faculty supervision, grounded in original research. The curriculum also examines how energy acquisition affects soil and water chemistry, ocean and land ecosystems, and climate change and pollution.
Applicants who hold bachelor’s or master’s degrees in geology, environmental science, physics, or chemistry may apply. The program is designed to lead to research and analytical training for work in earth and energy science fields, including leadership positions in industry, government, and colleges and universities.
