The Bachelor of Arts in Latinx/Latin American Studies at Dominican University provides an interdisciplinary exploration of the historical, cultural, and socio-political contexts of Latinx communities and Latin America. Students will engage with a diverse curriculum that incorporates literature, history, sociology, and political science, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the complexities within these cultures.
This program is meticulously structured to develop critical thinking and analytical skills through various methodologies, including case studies, fieldwork, and community involvement. Students will gain proficiency in both English and Spanish, which is essential for effective communication in increasingly multicultural environments.
The course is designed to equip students with the skills needed to navigate and contribute to the evolving dialogues around identity, migration, and transnational issues. Studying in the United States, a melting pot of cultures, enriches this experience as students can engage with vibrant Latinx communities and participate in real-world applications of their studies.
Prospective students are typically required to have completed a secondary education with a strong academic record. A focus on humanities and social sciences is advantageous but not mandatory. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in Latinx/Latin American culture and studies through personal statements or letters of recommendation.
Students should provide proof of English proficiency, typically demonstrated through standardized tests such as IELTS or TOEFL. Generally, a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 80 is expected, although higher scores may enhance candidacy.
International students must comply with visa requirements to study in the destination country. This generally includes obtaining a student visa, providing proof of financial support, and submitting academic transcripts and English proficiency test scores. It is essential to check official governmental resources for detailed requirements and processes regarding student applications.
