The Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency Program at Sussex County Community College helps adults prepare for and earn a high school diploma through small-group, self-paced instruction. Students focus on reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
Instruction is individualized and tailored to each student’s level of mastery. Students set their pace through regular attendance and focus on a program of study determined by instructors based on entering skill levels. Classes run in specific weekly blocks with set days and times, and the Pearson Vue GED Test is administered weekly at the college’s Testing Center.
The program is free to participants through funding from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Eligibility starts at age 16, with additional consent requirements for younger participants. Adult students can also take the HSE test by meeting eligibility rules and completing online or in-person registration.
Eligible students must be at least 16 years of age. 16 and 17-year-olds must have a signed consent form from a parent or guardian. 16 to 21-year-olds must complete a “Consent of Non-Enrollment in School”, available through our program.
Prospective students are welcome to enroll in an ABE/HSE program block once they have made an appointment to take the program enrollment test. This test is called a CASAS (Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems).
