The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Secondary Education at Boston College combines theories of education with hands-on work with high school students. You study child, adolescent, and young adult development; theory and instruction in curriculum for diverse populations; and methods for teaching a range of subjects to students from various settings. The program covers classroom assessment and how learning objectives connect to instruction.
The major includes required core courses (27 credits), two pre-practicum experiences (4 credits), and one full practicum experience (15 credits). Practica and their corresponding undergraduate inquiry seminars must be taken at the same time. The program also requires a second major in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, with acceptable majors including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, History, or Mathematics. Graduates are prepared for grades 8–12 licensure in STEM majors or grades 5–12 licensure in humanities (English and History).
