Studio Art

The Studio Art major offers courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, ceramics, graphic design, digital and darkroom photography, printmaking, video, architecture, and digital image making. Students study the meanings and ideas generated by artworks and the processes of making, and they build technical skills, visual sensibility, and historical understanding for working with different materials and technologies.

All majors take Issues and Approaches to Studio Art, plus a Senior Project course sequence that is required for senior majors and culminates in a public exhibition of a cohesive body of work and a published catalog. Beyond required components, students complete electives at specified course levels and choose from listed upper-level Studio Art and cross-listed Film options.

• The Major in Studio Art consists of 11 courses (33 credits).
• Students must have taken at least four semesters of course work in Studio Art prior to their senior year.
• It is strongly recommended to take Issues and Approaches in the sophomore year.
• Students must have taken at least six courses in Studio Art prior to their senior year.
• It is strongly recommended to take Issues and Approaches in the sophomore year after declaring their major or minor.
