Applied Physics PhD

The Applied Physics PhD is a doctoral program in applied physics that includes advanced coursework and original research. Students study core areas such as theory of classical mechanics and fluid mechanics, electromagnetic theory, quantum mechanics (including atomic and molecular physics), and thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, plus additional electives.

Training is delivered through a combination of core courses, electives, and close faculty mentorship. Students complete original research and work in modern laboratories in the Integrated Sciences Complex, supported by externally funded research programs. Research areas include quantum science, quantum information science, quantum computing, atomic, molecular and optical physics, biophysics and related topics, and condensed matter and physics of AI.

This program prepares students for careers in academia, national laboratories, industry, and emerging technology sectors. Students conduct research with externally supported programs involving leading federal agencies and industry partners, and they have opportunities tied to publishing in leading journals.

Applicants may apply directly to the PhD program with either a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Applicants must meet general graduate admission requirements in addition to the following program-specific requirements:

• A minimum, cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or international equivalent) on graduate work
• A grade of B or higher in calculus and higher-level math classes such as linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, and complex analysis
• A grade of B or higher in physics courses, especially in undergraduate quantum mechanics courses
• Statement of Purpose: applicants must specify name of the faculty or groups they would like to work with
• Three letters of recommendation; letters from non-academic associates are accepted, but at least one letter must speak authoritatively to the student’s academic preparation
• Résumé or CV
• The GRE is required
• Official transcripts for all institutions where you have earned more than 6 credits; if in a language other than English, include an English translation, validated by an official public translator
• Applicants who completed the majority of their undergraduate coursework outside of the United States are typically required to submit official TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo English proficiency test scores
