History MA

The University of West Florida History MA is an online Master of Arts in History designed to teach students to use a structured and analytical framework in interdisciplinary research and work environments. The program develops skills in analysis, inquiry, and research methodology, and it focuses on applying historical sources in argumentative research presentations.

The degree is organized into three tracks: Traditional History, Public History, and Maritime and Coastal History. Students take required methods courses and a Graduate Capstone, plus additional track-specific coursework. The program includes credit hours totaling 30, a course length of 16 weeks, and an estimated program length of 20 months.

Traditional History includes archival inquiry and the development of a unique piece of scholarship. Public History includes applied experiences and internships in cultural institutions. Maritime and Coastal History includes coursework in history and anthropology and allows academic and applied internships connected to professional employment or Ph. D. studies.

• Minimum of a 3.0 GPA in 15 semester hours of upper-division coursework.
• Students accepted without the 15 semester-hour prerequisite will be required to correct the deficiency before taking graduate-level courses.
• Submission of a letter of intent.
• Submission of a writing sample (undergraduate research paper preferred).
• Minimum of 15 semester hours of upper-division history courses.
• Minimum of two letters of recommendation.
• The department reserves the right to admit conditionally an applicant who meets most but not all of the above requirements, upon the recommendation of the Graduate Committee and under the conditions set by that Committee and the Chair of the Department.
