History Social Studies BA

The History/Social Studies, B.A. major at Whitworth equips students with broad knowledge to become an effective K-12 teacher of the social sciences. Students explore history in depth and develop foundational knowledge in political science, sociology, and economics. The major can be taken by itself or paired with an education major, and it is often taken in preparation for a master in teaching program.

Students build skills through courses such as Becoming a Historian, including an archival project and research paper. The program includes hands-on experience through internships: each year, history majors are selected to intern at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and students also pursue internship options such as the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture and the Historic Preservation Office.

Graduates generally become K-12 teachers in history and the social sciences in public or private schools. The program also supports preparation for state teaching standards through close work between the history and education departments, aimed at the competency exam in social sciences.
