Master of Science in Biology

The Master of Science in Biology (MS) at Alcorn State University prepares students for doctoral programs and professional careers in biological sciences. The curriculum combines advanced classroom instruction with mentored scholarly pursuit of new knowledge, leading to either a thesis document or a special project paper.

Students complete coursework plus an exit requirement of a thesis or non-thesis project. The thesis plan includes Core Courses such as Advanced Cellular and Molecular Biology, Advanced Biostatistics, Thesis I, and Thesis II, and it requires an oral defense for progression to degree completion. The non-thesis plan uses Special Project plus core courses and general electives.

Students applying for entrance to the Master of Science in Biology are required to submit an application for admission. Students must submit two letters of recommendation (references should be professors who have taught the student) and an official transcript from an accredited school. At least one transcript must document that the student has a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Some departments have additional requirements that students must meet for admission.

Applicants must also submit an Immunization Record for the traditional Biology program only, and international students must submit Credential Evaluations from an approved Credential Evaluation Service. Decisions are made only after receipt of all credentials by the department’s admission committee, and the entire application packet must be submitted to the Graduate School.

GRE General Test is waived.
