Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a concentration in Family Nurse Practitioner is designed to prepare graduates to provide global primary health care to diverse and underserved clients across the life continuum. The program includes learning outcomes such as evaluating theoretical and empirical knowledge for advanced nursing practice and nursing research, and demonstrating mastery of advanced knowledge and skills in advanced practice nursing (FNP).

Students complete 44 credit hours of coursework and an exit requirement of a thesis or a non-thesis project. An oral defense of the thesis is required for progression to degree completion. Degree completion also includes graduation expectations: a minimum of 38 credit hours of graduate instruction completed in residence at Alcorn State University, earning no more than two Cs in coursework, and writing an acceptable thesis and defending it orally or completing a non-thesis project.

Students applying for entrance to the Master of Science in Nursing must submit an application for admission. Required materials include: three letters of recommendation (professional, academic, personal on official letterhead with original signatures specifying in detail the applicant’s capabilities for graduate study and for future nursing practice); resume; goal statement; official transcript from an accredited school (with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 documented by at least one transcript); GPA of 3.0 or above in pre-requisites and nursing courses; a grade of “C” or better in an undergraduate introductory-level statistics course; copy of current unencumbered license to practice nursing in a state or US territory and eligibility for licensure in the state in which you will complete your clinical practicum; immunization record; and an interview with Graduate Nursing faculty.

Additional requirements include individual Nursing Professional Liability Insurance in the amount of $1,000,000/$3,000,000 (prior to first clinical practicum course). Decisions are made after receipt of all credentials by the department’s admission committee. The GRE General Test is required for admission but WAIVED.
