Master of Science in Secondary Education in Special Education

The Master of Science in Secondary Education, MSEd, concentration in Special Education prepares students to work in K-12 mild/moderate special education settings. The endorsement in Special Education focuses on curriculum and teaching strategies for working with educationally disabled students. The program also prepares graduates for advanced preparation to serve as teachers or practitioners in various educational capacities.

Students complete 36 credit hours, including 12 hours of required core education courses and 21 hours of required special education and psychology courses, plus 3 hours of electives. The program includes passing required exit exams for degree completion, with a Core Examination and an Area Examination. A graduation expectation also requires at least 30 credit hours of graduate instruction completed in residence at Alcorn State University.

Students applying for entrance to the Master of Science in Secondary Education in Special Education are required to submit an application for admission, Apply Online (www.alcorn.edu/academics/graduate-studies).

• official transcript from an accredited school (if a student has attended more than one school, transcripts must be submitted from all schools attended). At least one transcript must document the student has a bachelor’s degree.
• Immunization record (on-campus program)

Decisions are made only after receipt of all credentials by the Department of Education and Psychology admission committee. The department uses an admission formula to accept students. The entire application packet, including all supporting materials, must be submitted to the Graduate School.

A Standard Educator License in a teaching area is required for admission to programs in the Master of Science in Secondary Education with the exception of certificate programs.
