The Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) at Merrimack College is a CSWE-Accredited program focused on advanced generalist clinical and generalist training. Students build tools to work with individuals, families, and entire communities, using electives and field placements aligned to areas such as school social work, substance use disorders, criminology and criminal justice, spirituality and social work, and community engagement (macro).
Coursework is delivered as 100% online or as evening classes at the North Andover campus. The degree is a 60-credit program and includes 900+ hours of real-world experience through immersive field placement over two academic years. Field placement settings include hospitals, hospices and community health clinics; juvenile courts, correctional facilities, or police department social work; substance use recovery centers and outpatient mental health clinics; and community organizing and program management.
After graduation, students are prepared to apply for state board licensure and sit for the ASWB national exam. Students can also choose a School Social Work Endorsement track by using electives plus two additional 2-credit courses to earn a Massachusetts DESE endorsement for work as a school adjustment counselor while keeping flexibility for private or group practice.
