The Master of Science in Bioinformatics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign exposes students to computer science, analytics, biotechnology, and molecular biology. Students develop devices and applications that use big data. Research focuses on safeguarding the global food supply and supporting the health of humans and animals. Students specialize in one or more areas: Genetics, Genomics, and Bioinformatics; Immunophysiology and Behavior; Meat Science and Muscle Biology; Microbiology; Nutrition; Production and Environmental Management; and Reproductive Biology.
Students choose a Faculty Advisor. The program emphasizes work with molecular biology data across species, including human, biomedical, or livestock. Alumni examples described include roles such as computational biologists, senior analysts, and informaticians. Reported work involves genes, proteins, drug therapies, and DNA services.
Graduates also work with biotechnology companies listed by the program, including Zoetis Inc, Regeneron, Abbott, Pfizer, and Ancestry.
