The Master of Science in civil engineering includes graduate study that supports research on Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR). The work described focuses on capturing, treating, and injecting excess surface water into an underground aquifer made of permeable rock, sand, or gravel. Research topics also include groundwater overdrafting impacts such as subsidence and saltwater intrusion, and how surface-water diversion could address overdrafting risks and flooding.
The described research involves feasibility analysis using aquifer characteristics, land use, and water quantity and quality. It includes work with Dr. Emad Habib, supported by an external grant from the Louisiana Sea Grant program. The research resulted in two research papers for journal publications and included presentations at American Geophysical Union conferences. After graduation, the student plans to work in water sustainability and coastal protection with the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA).
