The Master’s in Biology at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette includes biology graduate study connected to marine biology research. One student, Abby Pratt, investigated the diversity and distribution of deep-sea octopuses in the western North Atlantic. Her work used museum specimens and deep-sea footage collected by remotely operated vehicles, and she identified fifteen octopus species in the region.
Her research also collected data to determine whether octopuses prefer certain habitats over others, and how those preferences varied by species. She worked to develop a predictive distribution model using habitat and environmental variables. Abby also learned R and Linux programming to compute statistics and build models while completing her biology graduate studies.
For further study, Abby Pratt planned to pursue a PhD in zoology at Southern Illinois University in the Fall, after completing the Master’s in Biology degree.
