The Mathematics Education, B.A. major at Whitworth College prepares students for teaching mathematics at the middle and high school levels in Washington state. Students develop a deep understanding of mathematics and how ideas connect, while building critical problem-solving skills. The major also emphasizes analysis, reasoning, evaluation, decision-making, and problem-solving through each course’s challenges.
Students learn through research opportunities with professors, including math research projects outside class. Career preparation includes a Career & Vocation Seminar with visits to workplaces. Students also participate in clubs and service-learning opportunities. Opportunities outside the classroom include tutoring, teaching assistant work for a calculus class, and supplemental instruction sessions.
The program includes a Math History faculty-led Jan Term study abroad to England, France, and Germany, where students visit locations associated with famous mathematicians. Students can also apply for a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). For competitive activities, students may take part in the Integration Bee or the Putnam competition.
