Medical Coding & Billing - Provider Emphasis Certificate

The Medical Coding & Billing - Provider Emphasis Certificate at Southeastern Community College is a six-class program focused on medical coding and billing for provider settings. Students study medical insurance and billing, electronic health records, diagnostic coding, and medical terminology. Key classes include Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology, Essentials of Coding and Billing, Diagnostic Coding, and Medical Terminology.

The curriculum includes a laboratory practicum that uses medical coding reports, plus hands-on practice with electronic health records software. The program sequence includes a prerequisite course (BIO-163) and fall-semester courses such as Essentials of Medical Coding and Billing, Introduction to Medical Procedural Coding, Diagnostic Coding, Introduction to Medical Insurance and Billing, and Medical Terminology.

This certificate can lead to work in clinic and physician offices and roles including Insurance Specialist, Billing Specialist, and Medical Insurance Claims Adjuster.

Students must meet all of the following criteria to be accepted into the Medical Coding and Billing Program:

• High school diploma or equivalency.
• Meet the following testing requirements: ACT Reading: 19; Math: 19. SAT Reading/Writing: 330; Math: 510. Next-Gen ACCUPLACER: Reading:248 or greater. ALEKS: Math: 14 or greater
• Standardized placement scores must be current (completed within 24 months) at the time of enrollment.
• Must successfully complete BIO-163 Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology with a grade of C (2.0) or above.
• Certificate can be earned one time.
