James Coby’s dissertation examined four works of literature that revolve around diluvian disasters (floods and hurricanes) set in the U.S. South, exploring how authors use disaster as enabling metaphors for re-examining (mis)conceptions about the South.
His project studied how ecological catastrophes function as forums for deconstructing ideas about gender, race, and identity in the American South. The research drew on theories of affect and emotion, and the dissertation connected its literary analysis to national and global ways of understanding the U.S. South.
