The Phlebotomy Technician Certificate at Southeastern Community College prepares students to work as phlebotomists in a medical or lab setting. Students study Medical Terminology, Medical Law and Ethics, Human Relations, and Phlebotomy, with a focus on drawing blood from patients and preparing samples for testing. The program covers communication and customer service, infection control, OSHA standards, patient identification, specimen collection, labeling and handling, and quality assurance.
Instruction is organized as a curriculum sequence for Fall I in one semester. Coursework totals 9 credits and includes lecture and lab components in Medical Terminology and Phlebotomy. Students complete the program to earn a certificate. The program uses competency-based learning outcomes and includes skill development in blood collection methods using proper technique and standard precautions.
After finishing, graduates can work as a Phlebotomist or a Blood Center Specialist. Enrollment requires students to be 18 years of age.
Students must be 18 years of age to enroll in the Phlebotomy Certificate.
