Social Science BA

Social Science B.A. is a bachelor’s degree with concentration areas in Anthropology, Economy, Subsistence, and Sustainability, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. The degree is designed for advanced course work in at least three social science disciplines, with an interdisciplinary focus.

Students complete General Education Requirements, the Alaska Native Knowledge Graduation Requirement, and Social Science program requirements for a minimum of 120 credit hours. The curriculum includes 42 credits of upper-division courses, with 24 credits completed at UAS. Students complete a Student Assessment Portfolio, take SSCI S200 in the sophomore year, and present the portfolio in the final semester of the senior year.

Students choose one primary concentration area and two secondary concentration areas. The degree includes Social Science Orientation, a Social Science methods course, language requirements, primary concentration requirements, secondary concentration requirements, and electives. It is offered in Juneau, with e-Learning for select emphasis.

After admission to UAS and declaring a social science major, applicants are admitted to the B.A. in Social Science program and assigned a faculty advisor.

• Students must complete General Education Requirements (GERs), the Alaska Native Knowledge Graduation Requirement, and specific program requirements listed for a minimum of 120 credit hours.
• Students must select one primary and two secondary concentration areas.
• The Student Assessment Portfolio (SAP) is required for degree completion, including taking SSCI S200 in the sophomore year and presenting the completed portfolio in the final semester of the student’s senior year.
