Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology undergraduate concentration asks how life works at the molecular level. It begins with a foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. The concentration has an emphasis on proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates, and small molecules such as vitamins, and it extends those approaches to areas including neuroscience, developmental biology, immunology, pharmacology, and synthetic biology.

Training includes a key component of hands-on research carried out in collaboration with a faculty member at Brown. Faculty sponsors come from the Chemistry Department and the Division of Biology and Medicine, and can include basic science and clinical faculty. Some courses offered in other departments, including engineering, geology, and computer science, are also useful.
