Global Black Studies

The Global Black Studies program at SUNY at Purchase College provides an interdisciplinary perspective on the historical and contemporary experiences of Black people across the globe. This course explores a variety of subjects, including history, culture, politics, and social movements, allowing students to gain a deep understanding of the complexities of Black identity and representation. By incorporating a global framework, the program emphasizes the interconnectedness of Black experiences, providing students with a broader context in which to understand these narratives.

Throughout the course, students will engage with diverse methodologies and theoretical approaches, which will enhance their critical thinking and analytical skills. The curriculum includes a combination of lectures, seminars, and independent study, guiding students to conduct original research and develop their ideas. By examining case studies from various regions—including Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean—students will gain insight into the socio-political factors shaping the Black experience worldwide.

The skills acquired in the Global Black Studies program extend beyond the classroom. Studying in the United States, a country with a diverse population and rich cultural heritage, further enriches the learning experience as students engage with local communities and historical sites related to African American history.

Applicants to the Global Black Studies program should possess a high school diploma or equivalent qualification. A strong academic record, particularly in subjects related to social sciences and humanities, is preferred. Additionally, letters of recommendation and personal statements may be required to assess the applicant’s fit and motivation for the program.

International students are typically required to demonstrate proficiency in English through standardized tests such as IELTS or TOEFL. An overall score of 6.5 in IELTS or 80 in TOEFL is commonly expected; however, specific requirements may vary depending on the program and the applicant's country of origin.

International students must obtain a student visa to study at SUNY at Purchase College.
