Teaching English to Other Languages MA

Teaching English to speakers of other languages (M.A.) at the University of Idaho prepares you to teach English as a second or foreign language. You study theory and skills tied to linguistics, language acquisition, and teaching methodologies, then apply them to classroom practice. You also learn to design lessons and materials, create assessments, and deliver instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse learners from kindergarten through adult education.

The program is a non-thesis master’s with a total of 30 credits. It combines coursework with practicum experiences, including supervised teaching practicum and English teaching internships. You can develop a customized non-thesis master’s project based on your TESOL interests. Instruction includes access to web-based instruction serving students worldwide.

This program aligns with TESOL International’s recommendations. It is for applicants seeking hands-on teaching experience and wanting to advance careers as an ESL/EFL teacher, program coordinator, language trainer, or instructional designer.

All applicants must meet the following degree-specific admission requirements:

• Education level: Bachelor's
• GPA: 3.0
• GRE: No
• TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo: 79/6.5/115 (for applicants whose education was completed in countries where English is not an official language)
• U of I’s American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) with score of a Level 6/Advanced Pass
• Letters of recommendation: Three

Other requirements:

• Provide one sample of your writing that best demonstrates your compositional skills and academic abilities.
• Primary speakers of English in the TESOL program must have studied a world language for at least one semester (or equivalent) within the preceding five years. Multilingual speakers of English are excused from this requirement.
