Emerging Global Leader Scholarship - American University Washington DC

The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) promotes educational access and opportunity while enhancing international diversity. American University states that AU EGLS aims to bring academic excellence, leadership development, and global engagement together so Emerging Global Leader Scholars can address issues faced by under-resourced, underserved communities in their home country.

AU EGLS is for international students who will need a non-immigrant visa to study in the United States. American University states that students interested in all majors offered at AU are eligible to apply. American University also states that preference is given to international students who have overcome obstacles and challenges, students from diverse and underrepresented global and socioeconomic backgrounds, and students with demonstrated commitment to leadership, volunteerism, and community service in their home country.

American University states the application process has two steps: applicants first submit the Common application and supporting documents, then submit the AU EGLS application and essays via the applicant portal. American University states that Zoom interviews and/or additional essay submissions are required for AU EGLS semi-finalists and finalists, and finalists and award winners are notified by a specified date.

American University states AU EGLS is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study based on continued satisfactory academic performance. American University states AU EGLS covers all billable expenses and does not cover non-billable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, and miscellaneous expenses. American University also states students who complete the AU EGLS process successfully may be considered for additional partial scholarships selected from talented applicants, with an additional funds proof requirement for those recommended for AU EGL partial scholarships.

• Must be an international student who will need a non-immigrant visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States.Not eligible if you are a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, U.S. pending permanent resident, or dual citizen of the U.S. and another country.Not eligible if you are enrolled in or have already begun any post-secondary studies at another university in their home country or the United States.Not eligible if you are graduated secondary school earlier than 2024.Students interested in all majors offered at AU are eligible to apply.Preference is given to students who meet English Proficiency requirements.Students who are still enrolled in secondary/high school and graduating by June 2027.

• Covers all billable American University expenses: full tuition, room, and board.Does not cover mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, and miscellaneous expenses (students will need to pay out of pocket, approximately US $4,000 per year).AU EGL partial scholarships: valued at up to US $40,000 per year (additional AU EGL Partial Scholarships available in addition to the full AU EGLS).

Submit the Common Application and all supporting documents per the AU international instructions checklist before January 15, 2027.Create an applicant portal when invited to do so.Submit the AU EGLS application and essays via the applicant portal by the required January 15, 2027 deadline.Complete the steps in order: finish Step 1 before submitting the AU EGLS application.Upload a bank letter and the completed and signed AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF) confirming a minimum of US $4,000 via the applicant portal.Submit official English proficiency test results to American University before January 15, 2027 (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test (DET), PTE, LanguageCERT, or Cambridge Assessment English Test), sent directly by the testing agency.Participate in Zoom interviews and/or additional essay submissions if selected as an AU EGLS semi-finalist or finalist.
