Harvard University Berkman Klein Center Fellowship Program

The Berkman Klein Center (BKC) Fellowship Program offers fellowships for scholars and practitioners who want to hold a fellowship with BKC. BKC states it seeks candidates who will propose and lead independent research initiatives aligned with BKC’s interdisciplinary AI research agenda, including work across agentic AI, language model interpretability, AI benchmarking beyond intelligence, AI & the human experience, and bridging the AI triad.

BKC indicates applicants may be in residence in Cambridge, MA, and that non-resident fellowships may be considered on a case-by-case basis. BKC welcomes applications for two appointment periods: a January–August period and an academic-year period corresponding to September–August. BKC expects fellows to produce public scholarship output and to engage with BKC community programming through interactions with faculty, staff, students, and other community members.

Selection is described through fit with BKC’s research agenda and the program’s expectations for fellows: producing at least one significant public output and engaging with BKC community programming. BKC describes fellowship commitments: fellowships last up to eight months for the January–August period, with specific dates determined between the fellow and BKC. For the academic-year period, BKC describes a September–August timeframe and indicates specific dates and commitments are discussed with the center. Fellows are expected to be free of most regular commitments so they can devote themselves to the fellowship, while acknowledging that fellows with their own funding may have other commitments.

• Applicants must be scholars and practitioners who wish to hold a fellowship with the Berkman Klein Center (BKC).BKC seeks candidates who will propose and lead independent research initiatives aligned with BKC’s interdisciplinary AI research agenda.BKC seeks candidates with a demonstrated record of contributing to public and scholarly conversations and taking action in areas including policy, technology development, academia, and/or civil society.BKC seeks candidates eager to deploy their work in service of understanding and advancing the public interest.BKC represents fellow disciplines across technology and industry; law and policy; applied and social sciences; and the arts and humanities.Candidates should have experience carrying out the form of work they propose to undertake during their fellowship.BKC particularly welcomes candidates with interdisciplinary backgrounds who blend technical and non-technical expertise.

• Fellows will produce at least one significant public output that impacts and/or informs scholarly, public, and/or policy debates in the arenas in which they work and BKC’s research agenda.During the time spent in residence, fellows will be invited to work from the Berkman Klein Center’s offices on the Harvard Law School campus.
