Michigan State University International Scholarships

Michigan State University offers international student scholarships to incoming first-year students with non-U.S. residency status. Unless otherwise noted, applying for admission is all that is needed to be considered for each award. Scholarship decision timing and selection limits apply to some awards, and meeting criteria does not guarantee an offer.

The MSU Non-resident Scholarship is available to all international students admitted to MSU and provides multiple award levels based on academic performance and the rigor and success within the curriculum. Honors College scholarships are for incoming first-year students who are invited to the Honors College, and there is no separate Honors College application process; consideration is automatic for students applying to MSU, with limited availability for some awards.

For selection, the MSU Non-resident Scholarship is based on academic performance with consideration of curriculum rigor and success. Honors College awards include an Excellence Scholarship for select non-Michigan residents and international Honors College invitees, a Professorial Assistantship for a select number of international and homeschooled Honors College invitees (and domestic eligibility tied to a GPA position), and an Honors College Distinction Scholarship for non-resident Honors College invitees who meet specified citizenship/residency criteria.

• Applicant must have non-U.S. residency status.
• For MSU Non-resident Scholarship: applicant must be an international student admitted to MSU (automatically considered).
• For Honors College scholarships (Excellence Scholarship, Professorial Assistantship, Honors College Distinction Scholarship): applicant must be an Honors College invitee.
• For Honors College Excellence Scholarship: applicant must be a select group of non-Michigan residents and international students who are Honors College invitees.
• For Professorial Assistantship: applicant must be a select number of international and homeschooled Honors College invitees (domestic students are also eligible, based on having a GPA that places them in the top 5% of applicants to MSU from their respective schools).
• For Honors College Distinction Scholarship: applicant must be a non-resident Honors College invitee who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, or a citizen of Canada or Mexico.
• For Red Cedar Scholarship: applicant must be a dependent or grandchild of Michigan State University alumni.
• For Presidential Study Abroad Scholarship: award use must be with an MSU-sponsored or co-sponsored study abroad program outside the United States.

• MSU Non-resident Scholarship award levels: President's Award — $18,000; Provost's Award — $15,000; Dean's Award — $12,000; 1855 Scholarship — $9,000; Beaumont Tower Scholarship — $5,000; Global Community Scholars Scholarship — $3,000.
• Red Cedar Scholarship: $1,250 annually, renewable for eight semesters.
• Presidential Study Abroad Scholarship: $3,000 or $5,000, depending upon the length of the program; award must be used with the first eight semesters of enrollment as an undergraduate at MSU or before completion of the undergraduate degree, whichever occurs first.
• Honors College Excellence Scholarship: $13,000 annually over eight semesters.
• Professorial Assistantship: annual stipend of approximately $3,500 for working 8-10 hours per week on faculty-mentored research or scholarly activity; renewable for four semesters.
• Honors College Distinction Scholarship: $5,000 annually; eight semesters.
