University of Texas at Austin USA Publishing Fellowship

The University of Texas Press is accepting applications for its Publishing Fellowship program. The fellowship program is designed to help prepare fellows for a career in book publishing by providing intensive and practical experience at the University of Texas Press. Fellows receive in-house, practical training connected to scholarly publishing and multiple Press departments.

The fellowship will be based in two departments. The primary departments for the fellowship are Marketing and EDP (editing, design, and production), and Rights & Permissions and Acquisitions. The Rights & Permissions and Acquisitions fellowship is open only to alumni of the University of Texas at Austin, while the Marketing and EDP fellowship is open to graduates of any university. The fellowship is in person and requires 40 hours a week during normal business hours.

Selection is based on applicants applying for one of the two fellowship tracks and the Press inviting finalists to interview. Applicants must be able to meet the university requirements for employment at time of application and must have a strong desire to pursue a career in publishing. Before accepting the appointment, fellows will be asked to sign a statement of understanding of the program’s purpose and procedures, including intent to complete the fellowship year.

Fellows complete a fellowship year and will be certified as having successfully completed the fellowship at the end of the training period. Fellows work primarily with their department managers but are exposed to all departments of the Press, attend appropriate staff meetings, and attend the Faculty Advisory Committee’s appropriate meetings. Fellows are not enrolled in academic courses and will not receive academic credit. After the training period, fellows provide a personal report evaluating the experience and the Press advises them on university press job opportunities and application materials.

• Applicants for the Rights & Permissions and Acquisitions Publishing Fellowship must be alumni of the University of Texas at Austin (undergraduate or graduate).Applicants for the Marketing and EDP Publishing Fellowship must be graduates of any university.The fellowship is in person and requires 40 hours a week during normal business hours.Applicants must be able to meet the university requirements for employment at time of application.Applicants must have a strong desire to pursue a career in publishing.Before accepting the appointment, fellows must sign a statement of understanding of the program’s purpose and procedures, including intent to complete the fellowship year.Applicants must specify which fellowship they are applying for (choose one of the two).Fellows are not enrolled in academic courses and will not receive academic credit.Fellows are ineligible for enrollment-related deferments on student loans.

• Stipend: $43,000 for the year ($39,500 base pay, plus $3,500 health insurance stipend).Payment schedule: $3,583 at the end of each month of completed training (prorated accordingly if the fellow leaves before August 31, 2027).Tax: the award is taxable, and the University must report payments to the IRS, although no withholding will be made.Health/insurance: $3,500 health insurance stipend; visiting scholar status allows fellows the opportunity to purchase student health insurance.Visiting scholar status at the University of Texas at Austin.Campus access: access to campus libraries.Parking: an “A” parking permit.Leave and holidays: the University will not be responsible for fringe benefits other than regular staff holidays and earned paid time off.Professional development: fellows will attend the annual meeting of the Association of University Presses and will attend one additional scholarly conference.
