USA University of Utah Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards grants to support study, research, or English teaching abroad in more than 140 countries. Fulbright applicants can propose self-designed study/research projects, participate in established research projects, or serve as an English Teaching Assistant (ETA). Funding may also be available for specialized Fulbright Programs such as the Fulbright-National Geographic Storytelling Fellowship and the Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health.

The scholarship is for applicants who meet the Fulbright eligibility conditions, including being a U.S. citizen and holding at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent by the start of the award. It applies to proposal types covering study/research and English Teaching Assistant roles.

Selection criteria include the quality and feasibility of the proposal (as described in the Statement of Grant Purpose), academic excellence or professional record, personal qualifications, language preparation, and how the candidate and project advance the Fulbright aim of promoting mutual understanding among nations. Selection also considers requirements in the proposed host country and the ability of supervising agencies abroad to arrange or confirm supervision and facilitate research clearance, if applicable. For ETAs, it considers demonstrated interest in teaching English and ideally some teaching experience.

Support lasts 9–12 months depending on the program. The award covers a living stipend, a travel stipend for round-trip transportation to the host country, and accident and sickness health benefits for a full academic year. In some cases, funding may also cover a stipend for books and research, full or partial tuition, language study program, pre-departure and in-country orientations, and mid-term enrichment activities.

• Be a U.S. citizen of U.S. national by the start of the award
• Hold at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent by the start of the award, but not a Ph.D.; applicants may hold a J.D. at the time of application
• Be in good health
• Sufficient language proficiency for the particular award; language requirement varies by country and award type, and includes language competency to adjust to life in the host country and complete the proposed project
• Preferred: applicants have not lived in the host country for more than 6 months

1. Prepare Fulbright application materials listed by the program, including the Fulbright Application, Statement of Grant Purpose, Short Answer Questions, and other required components for your applicant type.
2. If you are applying as a study/research applicant ONLY: include a Letter of Affiliation/Endorsement from the host country indicating institutional support for your project.
3. Submit required language evaluation materials, CV/Resume, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation.
4. Complete University endorsement steps if seeking University of Utah endorsement, using the University Endorsement Process; university endorsement is competitive and not guaranteed, and you must submit certain application components by the University’s deadline.
5. Submit by the National Deadline (after the University process, if applicable) and follow the Fulbright application path via https://us.fulbrightonline.org/.
