The Master of Science degree in Horticulture Sciences (MHORT) at Midlands State University develops knowledge in horticulture sciences and the chemical, biological, and physical principles that relate to crop plants and their environment. Students also develop skills to apply crop, soil, and environmental principles to solve crop production and protection problems, and to build leadership, communication, and technical skills in crop sciences.
Learning is organised through Level 1 modules in areas such as advanced crop physiology, advanced vegetable and fruit production, advanced crop protection, and postharvest physiology, processing, and value addition. Students choose option modules including horticulture business, herbs, horticulture biotechnology, aquaponics, greenhouse and irrigation technology, genetics and breeding of horticultural crops, and viticulture and oenology. The programme includes an MHORT 870 dissertation at Level 2, Semester 1 and 2, and Level 3, Semester 1.
To be eligible in the programme, a candidate must normally be a holder of a good first degree in Agronomy, Horticulture or Crop Science or related fields from a recognised University.
