A 12-Month Timeline to Apply to Canadian Universities

Strong Canadian applications are built over months, not weeks. Working backwards from a September intake, here is a realistic month-by-month plan you can adapt to January or May starts.

12–10 months out: research and shortlist

Explore programmes rather than just university names — the same subject can differ hugely between institutions. Shortlist 6–10 programmes across "reach", "match" and "safe" categories, noting each one’s entry requirements, deadlines, tuition and English-test minimums.

9–7 months out: tests and documents

Book your IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo English Test early so you have time to retake if needed. Start gathering transcripts, and request an educational credential assessment (ECA) if your programme or a later PR application will need one.

6–4 months out: apply

Submit applications through each university’s portal or the provincial system (such as OUAC in Ontario). Write a tailored statement for each programme and line up your referees well in advance of the deadline.

3–1 months out: offers, funds and study permit

Accept your best offer, pay the deposit, then immediately begin your study permit application — this is the step students most often underestimate. Arrange proof of funds (often a GIC) and book accommodation and flights once your permit is approved.
