Canada Graduate Research Scholarships (CGRS) — Master’s at McGill is listed under “Canada Graduate Research Scholarships - Master's (NSERC/SSHRC & CIHR).” The page states a value of $27,000 for one year on a non-renewable basis.

The award is for applicants who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or Protected Persons under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada), and who are enrolled in, have applied for, or will apply for full-time admission to an eligible graduate program at the master’s or doctoral level at a Canadian institution with a CGS M allocation.

Eligibility depends on prior study status and limits on time in full-time studies (as specified), not having previously held a CGS M, having achieved a first-class grade point average (as determined by McGill) in each of the last two completed years of study, and submitting a maximum of ONE CGS M application per year (the Research Portal allows submissions to up to three universities).

For McGill offers, the page states that offers from McGill are made only to students who will be admitted to an eligible Master’s program of study at McGill, and that offers are not transferable to another institution. The CGRS M value is one year non-renewable. The Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative and the Black student researchers Initiative are also shown with one year non-renewable values and the same December 1 Research Portal submission deadline.

• Protected persons must select “Refugee” under Citizenship in the Canadian Common CV.
• Be enrolled in, have applied for, or will apply for full-time admission to an eligible graduate program at the master’s or doctoral level at a Canadian institution with a CGS M allocation.
• If not currently enrolled in the intended graduate program, submit an application for admission at McGill University by the deadline set for the intended graduate program.
• Have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 12 months of full-time studies (or full-time equivalent) in the master’s program for which you are requesting funding; or (for specific cases) in the doctoral program conditions described; or (for other specific cases) in an eligible master’s program where the degree requirements will be completed before activation of the award.
• Not have previously held a CGS M.
• Achieved a first-class grade point average, as determined by McGill, in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent).
• Submit a maximum of ONE CGS M application per year.
• The Research Portal allows the application to be submitted to up to three universities.

• CGRS Master’s: $27,000 (one year non-renewable).
• Indigenous Scholars Awards: $27,000 (one year non-renewable) for eligible Indigenous students whose CGRS M application status is “Offered” or “Alternate” and who are eligible for the Indigenous Scholars Award.
• Indigenous Scholars Supplement: $5,000 (one year non-renewable) for eligible Indigenous students whose CGRS M application status is “Offered” or “Alternate” and who are eligible for the Indigenous Scholars Award, to the limit of available funding.
• Black student researchers Initiative — CGRS M: $27,000 (one year non-renewable) for eligible Black scholars whose CGRS M application status is “Alternate” and who are eligible for the Black student researchers initiative, to the limit of available funding.

1. Use the single application platform for all CGS Master’s students: apply through the online “Research Portal” hosted by NSERC.
2. In the Research Portal, categorize the proposed “field of research” (health CIHR, natural sciences and engineering NSERC, social sciences and humanities SSHRC) and consult the granting agency webpage “Selecting the Appropriate Federal Granting Agency” for questions on categorization.
3. In the Research Portal, select up to three universities where you wish to hold the award.
4. Submit the application only to universities where you are currently enrolled or where you anticipate submitting an application for admission.
5. For McGill offers: ensure your application aligns with the requirement that McGill offers are made only to students who will be admitted to an eligible Master’s program at McGill; offers are not transferable to another institution.
6. If applying through the Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative stream: apply through the CGRS M program and select the “Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative” option from the drop-down menu, self-identify as Indigenous, adhere to the Tri-agency Policy on Indigenous Citizenship and Membership Affirmation and associated Directive if selected for an award, and complete the self-identification and consent statement checkbox agreement.
7. If applying through the Black student researchers Initiative stream: apply through the CGRS M program and select the “Black Scholars Initiative” option from the drop-down menu (the page indicates additional actions continue in the CGRS M “How to Apply” section).

• Full application form on the Research Portal including: Field of Research that is appropriate; and McGill indicated as one of the Proposed Host Organizations with correct Faculty and Academic Unit/ Department / Division name.
• Outline of proposed research (uploaded by applicant in correct format).
• One (1) page for Proposal (must not extend into the next page).
• One (1) page for Bibliography/Citations.
• Up-to-date official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies included in the application, including transcripts for the CURRENT FALL SEMESTER; transcripts must be accompanied by their respective transcript key/legend.
• Two reference assessments (the page indicates a tutorial video for completing a Reference Assessment Form is coming soon).
• Canadian Common CV validated for the correct funding agency.
