The UBC Public Scholars Award is part of the UBC Public Scholars Initiative (PSI). UBC states that PSI intends to build connections, community, and capacity for doctoral students who link their doctoral work to an arena of public benefit and integrate broader and more career-relevant forms of scholarship into doctoral education. UBC states that awards of up to $10,000 support innovative/collaborative scholarship the student would otherwise be unable to pursue.

UBC states the award is for UBC Vancouver doctoral students (PhD, EdD, DMA, including part time PhD students) in years 1-5, and UBC Okanagan doctoral students in years 1-5. UBC also states that PSI Scholars in good standing are eligible to apply for a one-time award renewal of up to $10,000, with a separate application that can be completed during any funding period.

UBC states that a multi-disciplinary adjudication committee reviews eligible applications and selects funding recipients. UBC states that evaluation includes student past accomplishments and future promise, the project’s relationship to PSI goals, the quality of proposed scholarship, and need for alternative funding sources. UBC also states that students selected for the cohort may be eligible for renewal funding in a second year.

1. Download two files when applications open: PSI Fellowship Application 2026-2027 and PSI Fellowship Application Instructions 2026-2027 (files are available bottom of the “Further Information” section).
2. Rename and edit/save the downloaded PSI Fellowship Application 2026-2027 form as: LastName_FirstName_PSI.
3. Complete the Application form following the instructions, including character limits: “Outline of Proposed Scholarly Work” and “Relationship of Proposal to PSI Goals” are each individually capped at 4000 characters and 1 page.
4. Upload, as one PDF file, the completed PSI Fellowship Application 2026-2027 form and the Tri-agency CV (or an existing Vanier-Banting CV). Complete the Qualtrics form on the application page (Qualtrics requires 5 minutes to complete once documents are ready for upload).
5. Upload required supervisor letter of support (mandatory) and optional letter(s) of support from collaborators by using a separate Qualtrics form for letters of support; share the link with letter writers. Qualtrics requires 2 minutes to complete once the letter of support is ready to be uploaded.
6. Submit the application to complete the application process.
