Scholarship Description

The Canon Collins Trust Scholarships Programme aims to help build the human resources necessary for economic, social and cultural development in the southern African region and to develop an educated and skilled workforce that can benefit the wider community.

The application process for scholarships to study Masters courses in the UK beginning in September 2015 is now open.

The Canon Collins Trust does not currently fund PhD study in the UK; however it acts as a nominating agency for Commonwealth Scholarships.

Eligibility

To apply for a scholarship under this programme you must:

  • Be a national of, or have refugee status, in one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
  • Be normally resident in southern Africa
  • Be in possession of a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
  • Be applying for a full-time one-year taught masters course at one of the participating universities.
  • Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field

Please note that applicants will be expected to show their commitment to the development of their country and region.

Applicants for all schemes within the UK Scholarship Programme will be assessed on the basis of the information that they supply on their application.

Fields of study

The School of Oriental and African Studies and University of Sussex scholarships are open to any subject field.

The University of Oxford scholarship is limited to the MSc in African Studies and the University of Sheffield scholarship is limited to Canon Collins Masters ScholarshipsMasters study courses in the field of International Development offered by the Department of Geography. The scholarship at Queen Mary is limited to the MSc in Global Public Health and Policy.

Sponsorship duration

All scholarships are for postgraduate masters taught study for one academic year.

Scholarship benefits

Full tuition fees, a monthly stipend, a return economy flight, a settling-in allowance and other support whilst in the UK.

Method of Application

Applicants must apply to their chosen universities separately and scholarship awards are conditional on the applicant being offered a place at the relevant university.

The Trust is only accepting online applications for this scheme.

This scholarship programme reopens for applications on 16 December 2014 and closes on 26 February 2015, for study commencing in September 2015. Deadline is at 15:00 GMT on Thu, 26 February 2015.

Canon Collins Trust runs scholarship programmes in South Africa and the UK. It awards scholarships independently of higher education institutions. The eligibility criteria and value of award vary between its different programmes, so please check the guidelines and Frequently Asked Questions carefully.
