Bachelor in Philosophy Philosophy Major
Introduction
The Bachelor in Philosophy (Philosophy major) at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich is a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) that introduces fundamental philosophical methods. Students study central problems and viewpoints across philosophy, with teaching that includes logic, philosophy of science, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of language, ethics, political philosophy, and history of pre-modern and modern philosophy. The program includes the Philosophy major and a required minor subject.
The major makes up two thirds of the program (120 ECTS), with a balance of compulsory basic modules and in-depth elective modules, and seminar-based instruction. The program supports oral presentations and independent writing of short and long academic texts. Students also complete a research module and the BA thesis (Bachelorarbeit) in the sixth semester, presented in an advanced seminar and defended in a disputation.
LMU Munich lists study abroad or a double major module as an option in the fifth semester as an alternative to specialisation in a historical or systematic topic. The main language during the studies is German, and some optional courses are offered in English.
