Introduction
Master of Education Vocational Teaching Profession is a Masters program taught at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Germany. Intake: Winter and summer semester. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 semesters) options.
Heidelberg University’s “English – Degree Programme Component in the Master of Education Vocational Teaching Profession” is dedicated to the investigation of the English language, literature and culture in present-day forms and in their historical development. The course aims to expand and strengthen methodological and specialised knowledge from a Bachelor’s degree in English Studies and to provide practice in research-based learning.
The degree programme allocates eighteen credits in specialised education equally between English-language literature and English linguistics. Based on relevant theory and methodology, students study and discuss research-related academic topics and current research studies orally and in writing. The didactic portion covers bilingual instruction and learning, intercultural learning, language work, use of media in the classroom, and basics of school organisation, including links between English-language studies, didactics, and pedagogy.
Course structure follows the first to fourth semesters. In the first semester, students attend a major seminar in linguistics or literature and an introductory seminar in specialised didactics. In the second semester, the “Blended Module” is added, including “Task-Supported Language Learning and Teaching” and a complementary major seminar. After the practical semester (third semester), students enrol in the block course “Specialised Didactics 3” to reflect on school practices from an English-language didactical perspective. The fourth semester includes the master’s thesis, followed by a 40-minute oral examination on topics from English or American linguistics and literature.
