Introduction

Higher Diploma in Children's Nursing is a Diploma program taught at Dublin City University, Ireland. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (one-year, full-time) options.

The Higher Diploma in Children’s Nursing is a collaborative programme delivered by Dublin City University and Children’s Health Ireland. It is for applicants who are already registered nurses and want to specialise in children’s nursing. Students bring existing theoretical knowledge and clinical experience, and the programme builds on this through evidence based theoretical knowledge and skills aligned with the NMBI Standards and Requirements for Post-Registration programmes.

Students complete a one-year full-time programme. It includes twelve weeks of lectures delivered at DCU, followed by clinical practice within the clinical environment of Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street (or other CHI service). Students attend partner services for specialist placements as required. The programme includes thirty six weeks of clinical experience and four weeks annual leave, and students are employees of Children’s Health Ireland during the course.

On completion, students are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland as a Registered Children’s Nurse (RCN). Career options listed for graduates include Children’s Nurse, Community Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Clinical Nurse Manager, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Education, and Researcher.
