Introduction

Music PhD is a PhD program taught at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, UK. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

Royal Holloway and Bedford New College offers a Music PhD for postgraduate research in a range of musical disciplines, including historical musicology, theory and analysis, performance as research, composition, and ethnomusicology. Students work on a research project supported through supervision, discipline-specific research training, and opportunities to present research at regular PGR colloquia.

Progress is monitored through supervision reports and reviewed annually, with an upgrade viva that, if successful, moves you onto the PhD programme. Students also gain teaching experience by working as an assistant to an academic staff member on delivering and assessing aspects of the BMus curriculum.

The programme leads to post-doctoral research positions and other academic opportunities for many graduates, and it can also lead to portfolio careers as creative artists, performers, teachers, and/or researchers. Royal Holloway also states that a PhD in Music can lead to non-academic careers.
